AAC & multimodal communication
Gestures, signs, sounds, pictures, words, and AAC are all meaningful building blocks for connection. Therapy celebrates and strengthens every way a child communicates.
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes any tool or strategy that supports or adds to spoken language. It can be low-tech, like picture boards and communication books, or high-tech, like speech-generating devices and apps. AAC can help children who are not yet speaking, children whose speech is hard to understand, and children who have words but struggle to use them when they need them most.
Many parents worry that using AAC will keep their child from talking. Research shows the opposite: AAC does not prevent speech development and often supports it. AAC gives a child a way to be heard right now while we continue working toward their speech goals.
The Little Speech House does not currently provide AAC or assistive technology evaluations for obtaining devices.
